The Funk Portal Studio

Statement

Are we the viewer who gazes into the pond, the water within its muddy banks, the ripples emerging from the slightest meeting with the water’s tension, or are we simply the desire to encounter?

Whether the medium is fiber, language, film, or sculpture, my work bridges the gap between vision and sensation to converge the viewer and the work with which they participate.

Encountering the vastness of nature, you ask, “What am I, given all this? How am I alive, and what of this aliveness?” My work encourages the audience to become present in the same meditative pause. In every piece, I use my body as an illustration of naturally occurring events to draw attention to secret truths deep within nature and our individual bodies.

I typically begin a series of work from spatial, psychological, and philosophical research either originating from others or from self-studies and reflections. Conversations, casual reading, and personal experiences (oftentimes my experiences as a sex worker) pique my curiosity and catalyze this research as well.

Currently, my practice is inspired by two main threads:

1. how the second law of thermodynamics can inform our understanding of how we experience desire and

2. exploring how my ever-present practice of garment making/stitching/ “woman’s work” connects to my endurance-based performances.
